How does a Russian winery crack the World's Best Vineyards Top 30? Hire Patrick Leon—the man who made Château Mouton Rothschild legendary. His arrival transformed a Moscow insurance executive's vineyard into Russia's first 91-point Robert Parker wine. Now a NYC-trained sommelier son inherits what his father built.

Unique Edge First Russian wine at 91+ Parker points

Mikhail Nikolaev made his fortune in Moscow (Москва) insurance and banking. In 2006, he did what successful Russians do with capital: bought land in Krasnodar (Краснодар). What he did next was different—he hired Patrick Leon, the legendary French enologist who spent decades at Château Mouton Rothschild, and asked him to make world-class wine from Russian soil.

The result: 50 hectares divided into 2-hectare plots across multiple terroir sites, each planted with different varieties from a collection of 24. No massive production, no Soviet-era industrial approach. Instead, meticulous farming that treats each microclimate as its own experiment.
